The town of Templemore is
on the plain beneath the eastern slopes of the Devil's Bit mountain
range, in the centre of the upper Suir Valley, a prosperous agricultural
area. The town is defined by the Devil's Bit mountain range to the west,
by Barnalisheen and Baunmore bogs to the east, by Roscrea (17Km) town to
the north and by Thurles town (12Km) to the south. Templemore is
situated in the north of County Tipperary.
The
ancient name of the district on which the town now stands was Tuatha
Corca Teine. Teine was supposed to have been the son of the King of
Connacht, arriving in the district shortly after St. Patrick. A holy man
named Silean, who is reputed to have built a church in the area,
accompanied him. There is no townland called Templemore. The townland on
which the town is built is Kiltillane (Cill Silean- Sheelans Church).
Later a large church was built; the ruins of which can be seen in the
Town Park. It is from this church that the town got its present name '
An TEAMPALL MÓR',(large or Grand Temple) Templemore.

In
the 70-acre Town Park (part of the former Carden Demesne) are the
remains of Templemore Abbey and Black Castle. Also in the park are a
large lake and swimming pool, Pitch & Putt course, and a newly
constructed All Weather Athletic Track.

There is good fishing for brown trout on
the upper reaches of the River Suir near the town, and the lake in the
Town Park holds pike, roach, perch and tench. The North Tipperary
Foxhounds hunt the district. Ireland's Gardai (Police force) are trained
here in what was the old Richmond later McCan Barracks, now
completely refurbished as a modern Garda training college.
