Recently refurbished at a cost of Euro 380,000, the District Courts sits on the
last /Third Monday of Every Month. |
TOWN HALL
Built in 1816 and first used as a Market House, until the upper floor was converted
for use by the local authority, with the ground floor being used for commerce.
Destroyed by fire in the 1920’s it was totally rebuilt and in recent
years renovated. The original stone walls have been cleaned and pointed. Now
in use as the administration office for the Town Council under Acting Town Clerk Ms

ST MARY’S
CHURCH (Rector
Reverend Peter Cole Baker)
Built in 1789 on land donated by Sir
John Craven Carden, it was solemnly consecrated, by the Archbishop of
Cashel His Grace, Charles Agar in 1794.
The clock tower is now beautifully restored
and is floodlit as part of a millennium project.

CHURCH OF THE SACRED HEART (RC)
Built in 1883 and recently renovated, this fine cruciform edifice in the Gothic
style has numerous stained glass windows of considerable interest. The
feature of this imposing place of worship must be the altar work in both
native Irish and Sicilian marble.

McCAN BARRACKS
Originally built in 1783 on land donated by the Carden family, Richmond
Barracks was home to many famous and infamous British army units. The
Black Watch, among those that have been stationed
here. The Tipperary Artillery Regiment was based here.
Renamed McCan Barracks in 1923 in memory of the Late Pierce McCan it
was home to the 10th Uinsenach Battalion during the emergency and is
now home to the 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (Reserve). Almost all of
the barracks has been converted to accommodate the Garda College.

Built in 1964 to accommodate the decentralisation of the Garda Síochána,
the Garda College, following a major rebuilding programme costing in
excess of €7 million, is now one of the most modern police colleges
in Europe. With up to date modern teaching methods and state of the art
equipment, the college accommodates up to 300 students, up to and including
3rd level Degree courses.

LIBRARY
A new purpose built library costing in the region of €1million
recently completed at the lower end of the Main Street.
Being
built on the site of the Old Mills Building, the Edwardian Façade
is being preserved and incorporated into the design of the new public
utility. Designed to an extremely high standard, the modern layout
provides internet access to young and old alike, while the presentation area
has recently put on display numerous exhibitions of local artists and
photographs of the town in times gone by. Further details

TEMPLEMORE CHURCH (In Ruins)
Most likely built in the
14thcentury, it was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, consisting of
a large building and residential accommodation attached, in order for
priests to celebrate Mass in outlying areas. It was from this church the
town derived its name An Teampall Mór
= The Grand or Large Church. Records show Rev Fr Denis O’Donogan was
appointed to the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Corkatenny in
1387.

BLACK CASTLE (In Ruins)
GARDA STATION
Recently completed, the new police station occupies the site
of the former grocery premises of William (Billy) Bradish. Costing
in excess of €2.7 million, the original front of this long established
business premises is being retained. It is expected that the return
of the Gardai to the Main
Street, from their previous offices at Barrack Street will greatly
enhance the centre of our prosperous town. There are 3 Sergeants and 20 Gardai under Superintendent
Jim Mulligan, stationed in the town.
