Templemore Town Park

Incorporating an outdoor Swimming Pool, GAA grounds (Páirc Shíleáin), Lakeside Pitch & Putt Course, and the all-weather athletic track (Templemore Athletic Club). The park was purpose built by and planted by the Carden Family over two centuries ago,
and the mature woodlands, now feature some beautiful walks, a haven of peace and serenity
within the town. Stroll through secluded paths, under the canopies of mature oak, beech,
and chestnut trees, bounded by the picturesque backdrop of the Blackcastle on the western bank of the lake and the old church with its 18th century graveyard on the northern bank. The main focus of attention has to be the man made lake (7.5acres), a paradise to suit the most discerning coarse fisherman.

Amply stocked with pike, roach, perch and tench, many a relaxing hour can be whiled away, yet only 100 metres to the Town Centre. Where there is fish in abundance you will also have the long legged heron and these can be seen nesting in the upper region of the lake, despite the proximity to the urban area. Swans, mallard, coots and water-hens make their homes on this beautiful creation, while we are regularly visited by some migrating birds such a the Canadian or Brent Goose.

Some wild mink has recently joined other wildlife such as the fox or squirrel that
live in the woodland. Needless to say the entire Town Park is preserved as a game sanctuary and must be considered a veritable jewel by both local and visitor alike. The sporting life is well catered for in the town with up to date facilities available in all areas of participation. From the
recently refurbished all weather athletic track,( Templemore AC ) complete with all field sport requirements, through the large GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) ground (Páirc Shíleáin (JKBrackens) or to the open expanse of the soccer field and training ground (Lakeside Park), most field sports are catered for. However the town also boasts the Templemore Golf Club and Lakeside Pitch & Putt Club, both beautifully laid out courses in splendid surroundings at different ends of the town.

Picnic Area Templemore Town Park

Locally you can partake of hill walking on the gentle slopes of the Devils Bit or perhaps you might prefer to paraglide from its peak. There are plenty of quiet “boreens” for the avid cycling enthusiast, who will enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area along the back roads, without too much traffic. Along with the angling in both the Lake and the River Suir, the nearby River Nore is also a featured attraction. For those among us who are into game sports, the locality boasts adequate stocks of pheasant and duck, while vermin and clay pigeon shoots take place on a regular basis. The Golden Vale Hunt meets regularly in the town square.

The Tennis club has tastefully laid out floodlit all weather courts, in close proximity to the golf club. The indoor swimming pool is situated within the grounds of the Garda College with limited access to the Public. The local schools obtain great benefit from the use of this facility, and the ratio of swimmer to non-swimmer in the town is amongst the highest in the country. For the indoor enthusiast, you could consider Snooker or Billiards in the local Confraternity Hall, or if too quiet, perhaps one might consider Badminton in Our Lady's Gym Hall. Bridge is well catered for with games every Wednesday from October to May in the local hotel.

Taekwando is growing in popularity and training takes place in the Boys national school every Monday night. Basket weaving has recently returned to prominence in the locality and exhibitions of weaving are arranged in the town Park in conjunction with North Tipperary Arts & Culture. From a voluntary point of view if you want to get involved in the community, why not try the Templemore Tidy Towns Committee, who have worked at improving the appearance of our town since 1989. If you want to take to the boards, during those long wintry nights, why not join the Templemore Theatre Group, or to get your pipes in good working order, why not march with the local Thomas McDonagh Pipe Band. The Irish Countrywomen’s Association (ICA) since its
foundation in 1968. meet on a regular weekly basis, promoting social, cultural, health, environmental and community development.

Get involved in Community Games and help promote our budding young sportspeople, who will hopefully go on someday to represent their town at national or international level. The local troop of the 19th Tipperary Scouts (CBSI) formed 4/10/71 has its own Den in the Town Park, meeting on Monday nights. Cómhaltas Ceolteoiri Eireann promotes our national music, song and dance and “seisiuns” are held in local hostelries on various nights.
