Entrance to Garda College, Templemore

Prospective members of An Garda Síochána, the Irish police force, receive their initial training in Templemore. In 1964, following the Government's decentralisation scheme, a large portion of an old Army barracks, the McCan Barracks, was assigned to the Garda Síochána (Guardians of Peace). Massive reconstruction took place to provide every facility required for a modern comprehensive training centre was installed. The college caters for intensive training for all new Gardaí, Specialist Unit courses, as well as on-going Professional Development for existing members of the force.


The College has been designated an Institute of Higher Education by the Higher Education & Training Awards Council (HETAC). The 2-year Student/Probationer Education Programme is accredited by HETAC with an award of a Bachelor of Arts (Level 7) in Police Studies. The Leadership & Management Development Faculty (LMDF) at the College offers a further two accredited programmes for senior managers: A Bachelor of Arts (Level 8) in Police Management accredited by HETAC and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Executive Leadership accredited by the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School.
